When booting, the system usually makes some sort of beep or musical
sound to indicate it is starting up. When this happens, to use the
serial port, I believe that you need to hit a number to get it to boot
from service mode.
If I remember it right, the numbers were:
1 = Maintenance mode - to be able to define the console and change the
bootlist
4 = Default Bootlist
5 = User-defined bootlist
I can confirm that the S1 port on the newer pSeries works, and we used
the IBM cable P/N 40H6328 and a DB25 null modem cable to an IBM 3151 or
IBM 3153 dumb terminal at 19200 baud. IBM confirmed they upped the baud
rate for the master console connection on the serial ports...the older
models were all at 9600 baud. This should also be possible to a PC
running an emulator that has IBM3151 or VT100 as its options.
One more silly point - the machine's power light tells you what the
system is doing: Slow blink is standby, fast blink is system dump,
solid is powered on. It may be necessary at times to physically unplug
the unit from the power supply to get it to shutdown and reboot to see
the serial connection.
Finally, when you boot the system, are there any LED codes that show
up?
